Please read this page in full before you bring children to climb at ChalkUp as we don't want you to have a wasted trip!
Bouldering is a very accessible sport and there is no minimum age limit for bringing children to climb at ChalkUp Bouldering. We have a low level boulder wall specifically for children and it will suit them right through to around 8 – 10 years of age, depending on confidence and reach. After that, children will find the lower grade climbs on the adult wall are suitable for them. Ultimately, it is up to the supervising adult to decide where they should be.
Children aged up to 5 will only be allowed on the children's wall, for their safety and that of other wall users.
Children up to 16 years of age require supervision by a responsible adult.
One adult may supervise 2 children aged 6-15, or one child aged up to 5.
Children aged up to 5 may only use the dedicated Children's boulder room.
Please tell us at the front desk on arrival who you are supervising at that session.
Any responsible adult is able to undertake supervision. If the supervisor is not the parent or legal guardian of the supervisee who has signed the Acknowledgement of Risk form, there will be an additional form to be signed.
All children up to 16 years of age must be accompanied when in the centre, even if not climbing.
The signup process can be complicated, owing to the legal need for parental permission to use our facilities. If you follow these instructions it should help you get the accounts set up properly so you have a smooth check-in process on arrival. If you have any problems, please email groups@chalkup.uk for assistance.
The supervising adult who will be present at the time of the session should sign up using the relevent link below.

In this case, payment for the session will be made at the reception desk when you arrive for climbing. We will be able to check that all forms have been completed correctly.
We have monthly or annual memberships and multi-buy bundles for children. Please email info@chalkup.uk for more details.
Q: Can my 12 year old child and I both climb together?
A: Unfortunately not. Children 12 years of age and under need to be supervised constantly so it will only be possible for your child/children to climb. Your child/children cannot be left unsupervised while you climb.
Q: Can my 13 year old child and I both climb together?
A: Yes. Children 13 years and over need to be supervised constantly while they are climbing. So long as they behave correctly when they are on the ground, you are able to alternate climbing with them.
Q: I have one child aged 5 and one aged 8. Can I supervise both of these at the same time?
A: No. Children aged 5 and under require 1:1 supervising and so it is not possible to also supervise an older child.
Q: Can I bring a 5 year old child who will stay on the bouldering mat while I climb?
A: No, children aged 5 and under may not enter the adult climbing area for safety reasons.
Q: I have 2 teenage children (aged 16 and 17). Can I drop them off to use the bouldering wall unaccompanied?
A: Yes. They will need to sign their own Acknowledgement of Risk form.
Q: We are a couple with an 11 year old child. Can we all climb together?
A: Yes, so long as one of you remains on the ground to supervise the child at all times.
If you still have any questions, please use the chat box to ask them and we'll get back to you.
You can pay for multiple people in a single transaction. Please email groups@chalkup.uk with:
The Acknowledgement of Risk forms must be signed by the legal parent or guardian of the child before they will be allowed to climb. It does not need to be the parent or guardian who supervises them. The forms are available to sign in advance of coming to the centre, so the easiest way to get all the forms signed correctly is to purchase the sessions in advance, and use the online induction system, which will ensure you are presented with all the facts to enable you to provide an informed consent.
